we survived again

Bendigo Woollen Mills Prism 8-ply pure wool yarn

That would be to the end of July, always a difficult month. Sunlight hours have increased and the bitter mornings are slightly less bitter. The to-ing and fro-ing for reasons medical and in search of employment is presently in a lull. We are resting. YoungB is particularly resting between jobs, but recently had a promising job interview that we hope might see him off the resting list quite soon. He is still without a vehicular licence, so we’re also hoping that any potential office location is easily reachable by pushbike; or, if not, that public transport options are reasonable.

YoungB recently auditioned his way into a small – some singing required – role in a not-terribly-nearby community musical, scheduled to hit the boards in October. The rehearsal timetable is intense. It’s possible that we may occasionally be called upon to provide transport, but, for the most part, he has other options available for that. I’m pleased to report that he is dedicatedly practising both the songs and his dance steps.

I shared that information with an old friend, and mentioned that YoungB doesn’t sound like me. She’s not a musician, so it’s perhaps not surprising that she laughed at me! Of course, he’s a bloke. Of course, I’m not. My long years of experience suggest that family voices can often be timbrally similar, despite gender and range differences. For example, my sisters and I sound alike when we sing, so that our harmonies are generally pleasing even if – orright, make that when – we make a mistake; but our cousins’ voices also blend with our tonalities. Parenthetically, and in case you think I’m taking this too seriously, I note that my whistle and YoungB’s are almost interchangeable 🙂

As the photo suggests, I’m knitting here and there – often while waiting at hospitals and other such venues – but feel as if I’m not making much progress on the task at hand. It’s a new beanie for YoungB because he lent his grey one to Dr B. And, of course, never saw it again. We know, in the spirit of the old Italian adage that says, “The house never steals, it hides,” that the beanie is still somewhere. But it’s nowhere obvious. He does have other beanies, none handknitted by me. So, when I find a moment and the energy, I bring out the 4mm bamboo-tipped circulars and Bendigo Woollen Mills‘ latest special offering, a yarn called Prism. This colour is nebula. All of the Prism shades have long colour changes. It’s a delight to work with and, despite how slow I am, I’m still enjoying myself. The completed item will help YoungB to keep his head warm when he’s rehearsing in those empty, echoing halls.

And there’s to be another little one in the family early next year. I have a few ideas about what I might make. Whatever it’s to be, finding the requisite energy could require serious dedication. But, you know, now that the sunshine is once again brightening the days…
